The Republic of Italy GA Position Paper

Honored Chair, Distinguished Guests, and Fellow Delegates, the Italian Republic is honored to be apart of this general assembly.

In respect to what we believe is the most important issue, though all are significant in their own ways, the topic of economic growth with in the European Union is the most prevalent. We believe the policy regarding culture contributing to economic growth adopted by the European Commission is essential. The promotion of culture and intercultural dialogue is a vital element to preserve and help financially grow diminishing cultures. Italy would also like to promote the business between the U.S.A. and the European Union, who have remained our most important trading partners. The recession in the U.S.A. has affected Europe significantly, but high economic growth in Asia has provided Europe with great trading opportunities. However our economic is fully dependent on the euro and the policies of the Economic and Monetary Fund, helping the EU through financial difficulties. But to really help the sustain economic growth in the EU, Italy believes we should follow countries like Spain in adopting the Lisbon Strategy to tackle areas like the labor market, raising employment rates, and the welfare system. The most effective way to tackle this subject is to press through continuing on redefining and engineering the EU’s role in the global economy, let alone our own.

In regards to the use of Private Military Contractors (PMC) and Terrorism, Italy believes PMC need to be regulated. We call upon the UN to provide necessary regulation of PMC and mercenaries to ensure respect for human rights and accountability for any abuses committed. We see great issues regarding the regulation of such PMCs in the countries of Iraq, South Africa, and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. Italy believes PMCs should be held accountable for their actions and that each PMC should account for everyone involved in an incident with compliance to international health and human rights standards. Without these regulations PMCs conflict and endanger international and public law.

Finally in reference of the post revolutionary countries we believe that this topic needs to be addressed immediately due to the recent revolutions known as the Arab Spring. These revolutions have a tremendous effect on the global economic climate. We believe that on the path to recover we need these essential element: ceasing hostilities and violence; signing of peace agreements; demobilization, disarmament and reintegration; return of refugees and internally displaced persons; establishing the foundations for a functioning state; initiating reconciliation and societal integration; and commencing economic recovery. Through these methods a nation will be able to recover.
